Ryde’s established urban tree canopy is an important part of the local landscape, but it also means tree removal and pruning are subject to Council controls. MP Tree Care helps Ryde property owners navigate the process, from assessing the tree and preparing supporting arboricultural information to completing approved removal safely.

We service Ryde, North Ryde, Eastwood, West Ryde, Putney, Gladesville and surrounding suburbs, handling everything from hazardous or storm-damaged trees to difficult-access removals around homes, fences, driveways and other structures.

WHY REMOVE A TREE IN RYDE?

The City of Ryde places strong emphasis on protecting its urban forest, so tree removal needs to be supported by a legitimate reason and assessed against Council’s tree-preservation requirements. Common circumstances that may support tree removal include:

MP Tree Care can assess the tree and site, explain the available options and help with the arboricultural information required for your application.

Important: Ryde Council does not generally approve removal simply to reduce leaf or fruit litter, improve private views or solar access, or where practical alternatives exist for infrastructure impacts.

DO YOU NEED COUNCIL APPROVAL TO REMOVE A TREE IN RYDE?

In many cases, yes. Tree preservation is a legal requirement in the City of Ryde, and protected trees generally require Council approval before removal or significant pruning. The rules also include specific exemptions, so the requirements depend on the tree, property and reason for the proposed work.
    As a general guide:
  • Trees under 4 metres high or with a trunk diameter under 150mm may qualify for an exemption, subject to Council’s requirements and exclusions.
  • Certain tree species and weeds are exempt, although exemptions do not automatically apply to heritage trees, significant trees or vegetation within environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Certain tree species and weeds are exempt, although exemptions do not automatically apply to heritage trees, significant trees or vegetation within environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Trees affected by an approved development may be removed where the work is authorised by the development consent, without a separate tree permit for that tree.
Every property is different. MP Tree Care can assess your tree and site, explain the likely Council requirements, and assist with the arboricultural information needed before approved tree removal is carried out.

HOW IT WORKS

02 | Detailed Proposal & Quote

You get a transparent, itemised quote covering labour, equipment, disposal, and where applicable the Council permit process and timeline.

Once the tree is down, we can grind the stump below ground level and haul away wood and chips, leaving your yard clean and ready for reuse.

FAQs

Have questions about tree removal in Ryde? The City of Ryde has specific rules covering protected trees, heritage properties, development sites and environmentally sensitive vegetation. Here are answers to common questions from Ryde property owners.

Do I need Council approval to remove a tree in Ryde?

In many cases, yes. Tree preservation is a legal requirement in the City of Ryde, and protected trees generally require approval before removal or significant pruning. There are exemptions for certain trees and circumstances, so the requirements depend on the tree, property and reason for the work.

Can I remove a dead or dangerous tree without a permit in Ryde?

Not automatically. If Council is satisfied that a tree is dead or dying from natural causes, poses a risk to people or property and is not required as habitat, it may qualify for an exemption. A suitably qualified AQF Level 5 arborist may need to provide a risk assessment and evidence before Council confirms the exemption in writing.

Can I remove a tree on a heritage property in Ryde?

Heritage properties have additional controls. If the tree is on a heritage item or within one of Ryde’s Heritage Conservation Areas, tree removal generally requires a Development Application rather than a standard Tree Management Application. Supporting information, including an arborist report, may be required.

Can I remove a tree because its roots are damaging my pipes or driveway?

Not necessarily. Ryde Council considers practical alternatives before approving removal for infrastructure impacts. For example, Council does not generally accept root damage to defective service lines where other solutions are available. Depending on the situation, plumbing, structural or arboricultural evidence may help establish the extent of the problem.

Can I remove a tree to build or renovate my home in Ryde?

Tree removal associated with development needs to be considered as part of the relevant planning approval. If an approved Development Application authorises the removal of a tree, a separate Tree Management Permit is generally not required for that tree. Trees that must be retained under development consent or other restrictions cannot simply be removed later.

Can I remove a tree in North Ryde, Eastwood or West Ryde under the same rules?

Yes. The City of Ryde’s tree-preservation controls apply across the local government area, including Ryde, North Ryde, Eastwood, West Ryde, Gladesville, Putney, Macquarie Park and surrounding suburbs. However, individual properties can have additional controls because of heritage status, significant trees, development conditions or threatened vegetation.

Can I prune a protected tree in Ryde without Council approval?

Only limited pruning can be carried out without a formal application. Ryde Council states that pruning without approval may be permitted where less than 10% of the live canopy is removed within 12 months and branches under 60mm in diameter are cut. Larger pruning on a protected tree requires a Tree Management Application.

Why might Ryde Council refuse my tree removal application?

Council assesses factors including the tree’s health, structural condition, species, stability, habitat value and contribution to the local urban forest. Removal is not generally approved simply to reduce leaf or fruit litter, improve private views or solar access, construct a fence, or address infrastructure problems where practical alternatives are available.
